Noten und Neuronen: TNI Brings Brain Imaging to the Concert Hall

Last year, we reported on an unusual experiment combining live orchestral music with brain imaging. What began with musicians being scanned shortly before a concert has now developed into Noten und Neuronen – Music for Brain Health, a nationwide series of six science concerts bringing music and neuroscience to major concert halls across Germany.

The series opened on July 10, 2026, at the Cologne Philharmonic. The Bläck Fööss, musicians from the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, the UKB Choir and the UKB Project Orchestra performed a programme combining classical music, film scores and popular music. At the same time, researchers presented current findings on how music affects the brain, memory and cognitive health. A portable MRI scanner was even operated live on stage.

The Translational Neuroimaging Group is closely involved in the scientific and

technical implementation of the project. Members of our group developed digital applications for audience interaction and data collection, conduct the mobile MRI examinations and contribute to the processing and scientific evaluation of the acquired imaging and behavioural data. Visitors can voluntarily participate in mobile MRI measurements and digital memory tests during the events, allowing them to experience the research process directly.

The project investigates music as a possible lifestyle intervention for maintaining brain health. Listening to and performing music combines cognitive activity, physical engagement and social participation - three factors considered relevant to healthy ageing and the prevention of neurodegenerative disease. The concert series is organised by the University Hospital Bonn, the University of Bonn, the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics as part of Germany’s 2026 Science Year, Medicine of the Future.

Following the opening concert in Cologne, Noten und Neuronen will continue in Bonn, Berlin, Munich and Dortmund. The final concert will take place at the Beethovenhalle Bonn on December 11, 2026.
