The Dieter Janz Prize honors outstanding young researchers in epileptology who are under 35 years of age. It is awarded annually by the Wolf Epilepsy Foundation and the German Society for Epileptology. Epilepsia is the world's most important journal on epileptology. Once a year, the editorial team selects the most important clinical and basic scientific work and presents the winners with the Epilepsia® Award. This year, both awards go to Tobias for his study: „Proof of concept: Portable ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis of epileptogenic brain pathologies“, published in Epilepsia® in 2024.

For the study, 23 people with epilepsy and 24 lesions were examined using clinical 3-Tesla MRI. Seventeen of the 24 lesions, or almost three-quarters of the total, were detected as abnormalities using ultra-low-field MRI. In eleven of these cases, i.e. almost half, a complete diagnosis could be made based solely on the ultra-low-field MRI examinations. The detection of tumors, post-traumatic lesions, and hippocampal pathologies in ultra-low-field MRI was particularly successful.

„What fascinates me about neuroimaging is how quickly new technological advances can be translated into clinical practice. A technology developed and validated today has the potential to help patients tomorrow,” says Tobias. „In this project, the interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues in epileptology and neonatology was particularly fruitful.“

“Thanks to Hemmen Sabir from the department of neonatology, the University Hospital Bonn was an early adopter of ultra-low-field MRI, and thanks to the good cooperation between neonatology, neuroradiology, and epileptology, we were able to use this system for the first time worldwide in the field of epilepsy“ adds Theodor. The Translational Neuroimaging is very happy for Tobias and kindly congratulates him on winning both awards.
