Music and the brain: World-class music stars and the Translational Neuroimaging Group

In summer last year, Theodor and his long-time friend Magdalena Hoffmann, who is solo-harpist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO), went out for some drinks in Cologne and had an idea that would lead to last weekend’s special edition of “Music & Brain” hosted by the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in the Federal Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonn together with the Choir and Orchestra of the University Hospital Bonn, musicians from the BRSO and star conductor Daniel Harding.
The agenda of this day was quite amibitious: Scientific data, acquired just hours before by brain scanning, was presented on stage: This was possible because several members of the BRSO, along with conductor Daniel Harding, had agreed to have their brains examined that afternoon and because Tobias organized the Translational Neuroimaging Group and its partner workings groups Stöcker, Reuter and Schultz.
Studies have shown that the brains of professional musicians have special features, for example in the areas responsible for fine motor skills. Would such characteristics be evident in this small sample? They were indeed, as Professor Alexander Radbruch, director of the Department of Neuroradiology, pointed out in his presentation.
UKB choir and orchestra performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s Chorfantasie, conducted by Theodor, and the UKB orchestra performed the Ungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms, conducted by Daniel Harding.
